My husband has to take blood thinners and im pregnant will our baby have birth defects?

So my husband had a mechanical valve placed in the aorta and

had to start taking medication. Both medications he takes is for

thinning his blood my concern is what are the chances our baby

can develop a heart problem just like daddy. My husband has to take blood thinners and im pregnant will our baby have birth defects?
If your husband's heart problem was congenital, then I would most definitely check your baby's heart and see about getting a fetal echo cardiogram and insist he be closely followed after he is born.

Congenital Heart Defects affect 1 infant out of every 115 to 150 born. It is the most common birth defect there is. The good news is that many CHD's are mild and only need monitoring. Many kids grow out of these problems and never have issues with them at all. There are about 40 CHDs known.

My son died three days after he was born from the most severe CHD...Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. There are no heart issues (CHDs) in either my husband's nor my family, so they can strike anyone, whether there is a family history/genetic component or not. The really frustrating thing for me is that many states in the US mandate certain testing when an infant is born, namely a blood test for PKU (Phenylketonuria) which occurs with about 1 infant in 17,000, yet there is virtually no mandated testing for CHDs. Down's Syndrome (occurs 1 in about 800) gets more attention than CHDs when discussing possible problems with newborns. Think that you will be able to tell if there is a heart issue just by listening for a heart mummer? Think again. When my son was born, my midwife heard nothing out of the ordinary that caused her alarm bells to go off.

Now, after just saying all that, the odds ARE with you that your son is FINE. But DEFINIETELY get it checked out and INSIST that he be tested with the echo. Heart problems are largely fixable if you know ahead of time.

Good luck.My husband has to take blood thinners and im pregnant will our baby have birth defects?
You need to speak to your doctor and also your husbands consultant about the percentages and probability of your babty being born with any heart problems. There is a chance any child can be born with these sorts of problems, but there is also a chance that it is not a hereditary problem.

I doubt you will get any accurate answers on here, as it depends entirely on your lifestyle, family medical history, circumstances of your husbands heart problems, your health etc etc.
