My husband is wanting a motorcycle, and i want to buy one for him... surprise! At the same time i am concerned, he has a thing for speed, and he doesn't want something ';too small'; for looks i suppose. He is 5`10 and alot of muscle with it, so he is not on the light side. Oh and a first timer!!!! I am afraid that he won't be able to handle something big, but i want to appease his ';man pride'; on size. What information should i be looking for? MPH? CC's? hieght, wieght? Please HELP!
Any info would be very much appreciated and taken into careful consideration. What would be the ideal motorcycle for my husband?
First of all he is obviously a lucky man for the obvious reasons. I think you are, as most spouses, perhaps more worried than necessary for safety. I think your husband may certainly be capable of maturity and will learn valuable information when acquiring his Motorcycle license.
ANY man would be happy with ANY 600CC Sport bike when they are getting it from there wife.
examples Asian:
Honda CBR 600 F4i; Honda CBR 636
Kawasaki ZX-6 ; ZX-7
* Susuki GSX-R 600 ; * GSX-R 750 ; SV- 650
Yamaha R-6 ; FZ-600
examples European:
Triumph Daytona 600i
Mv-Agusta (very expensive) but AWSOME
Ducati 748 ( aslo a bit pricy for a first )
Most of these I only mention for comparison sake to familarize you with some the names you will hear in shopping for a bike. I suggest a Suzuki as the 750 is a VERY respected sport, considered to be the best by many. Its affrodable as well. You will apease his sense of pride as well your bank account. I think he would find himself wanting after a season on a 600 assuming he is athletic and coordinated. Plus it will tax the final drive to ride ';two up'; (w/ you).
Good luck and I can help further I have contact info on my profile. Sorry for all the '; I think'; but the questioned is subject to be supported by oppinion. What would be the ideal motorcycle for my husband?
i am new to bikes but i would say go look at bikes with him tell him u want 1 too and see what he likes....if he likes cruisers get him a honda shadow aero 750(motor size) go look at it see what he say...this 1 is low bike . go sit on them see how u feel.
Although your plan to surprise him with a gift of a bike is a wonderful thought it is however faulted.. Only your husband can decide which bike is the most comfortable and best suited for him. He will do this by research and test riding the bikes that appeal to him. Don't surprise him with a bike that he didn't decide upon himself.
well really he shouldnt start out on something big, its VERY risky. I would suggest a kawasaki ninja 250 (small bike) or a EX500 (still small but bigger), a 600 is risky bisness as they are very fast and if he hits the powerband 6-7000 rpm and dosnt know it or isnt in the right position things could get messy, it will literally make things blur and mess with your time/space perception, I know cause my first bike was a 600cc and the first time I really dug into the thing I almost pissed my pants. I can see his reasoning on not wanting a bike too small cause the small ones do look ugly compared to the bigger ones but you want him to live unscathed to look good on a bigger bike so he can take you for a ride right?? The most important thing to pay attention to is the engine size (cc's).
You never stated what kind of bike he wanted, if its a sport bike NOTHING over 600 and 600 is hot water, if its a cruiser nothing over 800cc, crusiers are heavier and geared diffrent so the extra power is nessary to keep things moveing.
Oh boy...well he's going to be pissed off with anything less than a 600. Problem is, a 600 is not great to learn on.
Persaude him to learn on a 250 if you can. He will live longer and DEVELOP SKILLS. If you can't persaude him, go for a 600. Get a Ninja 650R, it looks fast, but isn't that bad. It's a twin motor with a lot of torque for fast launches and easy city riding, but doesn't have the crazy power of the new 600cc 4 cylinder race replicas...CBR600, R6, GSXR600, etc.
Those are dangerous for newbies. Tons of people die trying to learn on those. DO NOT GET HIM A LITER BIKE (1000cc). Those are for people who know what they're doing ONLY.
'Lots of good advice already given, but best so far is the motorcycle safety course. Get that done %26amp; he can (usually)skip the motorcycle driving test when adding the motorcycle endorsement to his driver's license. He may come away from the course with a better feel for what he wants.
That said, let me suggest something in a dual-sport bike. They can cruise on long trips if desired, are highly maneuverable in traffic, and can also be used on secondary roads, opening up many more travel options. The afore mentioned Suzuki V-Strom bikes are good examples, but don't overlook the BMW GS1200. There's a reason it's the number one selling bike in the WORLD, and is rapidly being adopted by police agencies all over the world. It's ABS brake system makes it safer in a panic stop, which he will encounter more often than he'll like. I've had two Hondas, the requisite Harley Davidson, but now I own two BMWs %26amp; will never ride another bike. (and, I ride a lot!).
lcary -
First and foremost, get your husband to take an MSF Rider course. They're usually held at the local community college or at some stadiums. I'm sure there's a link on the 'net somewhere.
here it is.. www.msf-usa.org
As for the bike, if he's big like you say - he can start out with something in the 600 cc range. They have plenty of power but depending on the model they may be short on ';room';. Big people ride bigger bikes because they don't like to bend over like pretzels to get where they need to go. Look at the models in the 750 cc range...like the Suzuki Katana - a great bike that doesn't go 900 mph but won't leave him wishing he had more. If he's into dual purpose bikes - the Suzuki Vstrom 650 or 1000 might interest him.
Depends on the style of bike. If he likes crotch rockets, a good smaller engine bike would be a Honda CBR 600, or a good larger engine crotch rocket would be a Suzuki GSX1000. Harley Sportsters in the engine size of 883 to 1200 would be good choices for a cruising bike, plus the Harleys would probably be more comfortable for you on rides, and offer more add-on accessories. The choice is all in how he would like to roll.
All motorcycles are deadly.
The rider and his knowledge is where safety begins... Experience comes from making mistakes and on a bike one wrong move and you could end up as a paraplegic.
What if you bought him something that ended up killing him?
First time riders have lots to learn so I would rethink my strategy.. I hope I didn't scare you but I know what's it like to loose control at 200kmh.... It can happen at an instant to anyone anytime...
Start small and learn big... Good luck
Second hand cheap learning bike would be 1988 Honda Nighthawk s 750....... Then after he gets bored of it you can learn to ride it... hehe
First his ego should be given into so get a Harley Davidson,
my personal favorite is the Sportster1200.
Also get one with a queen seat,so you can ride too! You'll know why once you've been on it for about an hour.
