I am looking for a vacation spot for my husband and I near or in Ontario Canada?

We live near Toronto and don't wish to travel more than 6 hours away driving. We don't have a lot of money. Probably going in September or October. We enjoy hotels, shopping, cabins, retreats etc. Any recommendations are appreciated.I am looking for a vacation spot for my husband and I near or in Ontario Canada?
Both the suggestions for Algonquin Park are great - I used to work in the Park and I loved spending summers up there. September will be very nice and since the Park pretty much quiets down after Labour Day weekend, it won't be quite so crowded.





If you don't want to go north, you could try Niagara area. My favourite place is White Oaks Hotel %26amp; Resort which is just outside Niagara on the Lake. It's a bit pricey but well worth the stay. Another possibility, which is right in Niagara on the Lake is Queen's Landing. You can walk to great shopping on the main street and it's a quick drive to about 20 different wineries in the area. If you go in late September, the Niagara Wine Festival runs from Friday, September 22nd to October 1st which is a Sunday so there will be plenty of activities going on in the area.

You can't beat Algonquin Park. How about staying in a cottage at Bartlett Lodge? Or one at the Algonquin Inn? (which is about 5 minutes from the park). You can look at the various rooms and cabins and the fares on their websites.

Actually I was going to write what *crazylegs* said. Algonquin is a BEAUTIFUL provincial park. Have gone camping there a few times (desperate to go again this year) and saw dozens of bird of prey, moose galore, and bears. I would reccommend the wolf howl (normally starting around this time I think) My end of the 600 car line up didn't hear them but the other end did and it was quite an experiance!!
what about kingston :) its only 3 hours or so on the 401,





we have lots of nice hotels,, and bed and breakfasts.. while here you can check out the 1000's island..


there is usually some sort of fesitval or something neat to check out either here or in near by gan (there is a casino in gan)


also brockville and belleville are near by..


westport is about 45 mins north of kingston


and it is a beautiful little town with lots of neat little shops and resteraunts
From one Canadian to another may I suggest perhaps going north. It's about a 3.5 hour drive to Algonquin Park and the nature is beautiful. About a half hour outside the park is Huntsville and there are many fine shops there and some good restaurants also, I would recommend Louis' as it has the best Greek salad this old man has ever eaten. For the price of gas and some accommodations you would have a fantastic time, you could rent canoes or just take in the beauty that would be surrounding you at that time of year. I don't even live in that section of Ontario but would recommend it to anyone without hesitation. Have a great holiday regardless of you go and drive safely.
Manitoulin Island, you can take the fairy from Tobemory (at the end on the Bruce Peninsula) to South bay. Its a nice ride across and isn't too expensive. Manitoulin Island itself is the largest freshwater island in the world, and it is absolutely beautiful.


Do a google search on it and get some pics, truly breathtaking.


Its more of a getaway type place where you will find lots of bed and breakfast type places. Like I said do a search of ';Manitoulin Island and you will find all kinds of info.

Try Bobcaygeon or Tobermory. Both beautiful and easily within 6 hours (not sure exactly how close) of Toronto.
You might want to try the Thousand Island region. It'S absolutely beautiful, you can take a cruise on the St. Lawrence river and see all the beautiful houses, even stop at two of them to visit them (though they're on American territory, you would need a passport or birth certificate to go to those islands). I went two years ago and really liked it. There are lots of hotels or inns you can stay at. Check the link below.
Lake Simcoe and Hudson Bay come to mind. Even though I usually liked these spots best in summer when one could go swimming.


Sparrow lake is another.
